American Sign Language

The Acalanes Union High School District requires that students complete 20 credits in the Breadth area of the graduation requirements through World Language or Career Technical Education (CTE) courses.

AUHSD strongly encourages students who wish to meet the high school graduation Breadth requirement through World Language to take a World Language currently offered at their school site.  AUHSD offers a broad selection of World Language courses.

American Sign Language is not taught in person in AUHSD; therefore, it is not a class that students can sign up for during course registration.  The District recognizes that some students have particular learning needs or a specialized interest in American Sign Language.

Students wishing to take ASL should fill out the following application and return it to their school counselor for review:  ASL Application, 2026-2027. The ASL class is for students in grades 10-12.

The AUHSD Educational Services Department will provide final approval.  Students should indicate a compelling reason for taking ASL and not fulfilling the Breadth requirement through a World Language or Career Technical Education course offered at their school site.

The only ASL course the District will place on a student’s AUHSD transcript is the ASL course offered at no charge through the District-approved online program.
