California Health Kids Survey

The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) was administered in fall 2019 to students in grades 9 and 11 at the four comprehensive high schools and all students at the Acalanes Center for Independent Study. Student participation was voluntary and anonymous with passive parental consent. The CHKS, developed by WestEd for the California Department of Education, is the largest statewide survey of resiliency, protective factors, and risk behaviors in the nation.  WestEd’s research shows that in anonymous, confidential surveys, such as the CHKS, there is a high degree of validity in students’ answers – even with sensitive questions.
