A Message from the CHS Bias Incident Reporting Team (BIRT)

    Dear Campolindo Community,

In June of 2020, several members of the community, including administration, teachers, students, parents and coaches, began meeting in an effort to cultivate a stronger sense of belonging and inclusion on campus.  One of the first major accomplishments of our equity teams was a new mission statement: Campolindo strives to inspire and empower every student by fostering belonging, well-being and accountability in an equitable learning environment. Since it's publishing, we have worked diligently to make these aspirations into a reality.  We have a new Campolindo Pledge that many have signed, we are committing to training in Restorative Justice practices, there is a new equity leadership class for students, and there is a Bias Incident Reporting Team (BIRT) comprised of teachers, counselors, wellness, and administration. BIRT meets weekly to discuss harm done to community members and support a transition to a safer and more inclusive community.

We feel positive about all of this progress, but recognize there is much more work to be done. In the opening weeks of school, there have been four incidents reported to BIRT. One incident involved antisemitism. The other incidents involved racist graffiti targeting African Americans; one of these incidents included the use of the N-word.

BIRT wants to state clearly that this is unacceptable, and these actions will not be tolerated in a school committed to anti-racism and anti-bias work. The school's Administration is investigating these incidents, and we must all work to ensure that every student at Campolindo is safe and has a strong sense of belonging. We appreciate the courage of the reporters in helping foster a stronger sense of belonging on campus; speaking up is never easy, but it does keep us moving in the right direction. Please know that if you use the BIRT system, we will process it quickly, and report out monthly. If you report anonymously, that is welcomed, but a team member cannot follow up with you directly. If you use your name, you will be contacted to see if you need further support. If you wish to be more directly involved in our efforts to improve school culture, check out the various diversity clubs on September 15th during Club Day. For any adult in the community wanting to support the school, you can check out the parent group, which is doing incredible work.

We are stronger together, and better than our worst actions. BIRT wants to empower Campolindo to build the community we want to see.

    Thank you,

    Campolindo High School BIRT

    Equity Work at Campolindo:

An Overview of Current Initiatives and a Commitment to Do More

As racial equity work at Campolindo expands, transparency and accountability are essential. The site administration is partnering with students, staff, and parents to ensure that all stakeholders receive timely information about challenges and progress. The Parents Club Bulletin, the Campo Daily Bulletin, the school's website, and Principal messages will include updates on the school's racial equity work. Groups such as the Campolindo School Site Council, Parents Club, Instructional Council, Equity Team, ASB Leadership, and Diversity and Inclusion Committee regularly address racial equity efforts.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Action Plan

The Campolindo High School Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Action Plan is now available for stakeholders to review. This plan was collaboratively developed by staff with critical input from student leaders and the Parent Club’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Please use the following link to access the action plan: CHS Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Action Plan.

English Curriculum Update (11/09/2020): The Campolindo English Department has demonstrated a tremendous commitment to building a curriculum that reflects and honors diverse voices. Department members have adopted an array of new texts by female authors and authors of color; in addition, they are actively building lessons that foster diversity, equity, and inclusion. The following document highlights some of the excellent work by the English Department: CHS English -- Equity in Practice.

Social Studies Curriculum Update (2/15/21): The Campolindo Social Studies Department continues to strengthen the curriculum through updates and revisions that incorporate and celebrate diversity and inclusion. Please read more about how faculty in this department are leading the way for a more diverse and inclusive curriculum: CHS Social Studies -- Equity in Practice.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Survey Data

In early October Campolindo High School students participated in a campus culture survey with the purpose of gathering baseline data to measure progress on the newly developed mission statement. Please click this link to access more information and the preliminary data.

    The Campolindo Pledge

In August, students will have an opportunity to learn about and take the Campolindo Pledge. You may review the pledge via the following link: Campolindo Pledge 2020.

    Parent Partnerships

Over the past two years, Campolindo has hosted multiple parent education events on diversity and equity. These events were not well attended. Last fall, the Campolindo Parents Club started the Diversity and Inclusion Committee and recent meetings of this group have been powerful. School and parent leaders will work to ensure that racial equity work is not tangential to the school's traditional priorities. Racial equity work needs to be central. Through parent forums, presentations, book clubs, advocacy, and other strategies, the school-parent partnership around racial equity will be strong.
