Letters of Recommendation

  • When applying to a 4-year college, many require one or two letters of recommendation from teachers. Miramonte teachers have full discretion about who they choose to write letters for and are not obligated to write any. On average, it takes teachers 45-60 minutes to write a letter, so it is important to be respectful and appreciative.

    Policy

    • You must wait until after Spring Break to ask
    • Make sure you will actually need a letter—UCs, CSUs, and community colleges do not take LOR
    • You may only ask 2 teachers for recommendations
    • Teachers who will not be at Miramonte the following year cannot write letters of recommendation
    • Remember you MUST also ask your counselor so they know you will need one
    • In the fall of senior year, officially request in MaiaLearning

    Guidelines

    • Politely ask face-to-face
    • Tell them why you chose to ask them - you enjoyed the class, their style of teaching resonated with you, or anything else that stood out for you
    • Inquire about their policy for writing letters of recommendation
    • Offer to complete a Teacher Brag Sheet to help them with their letter
    • In the end, thank them again and let them know you will follow up in the fall

Counselor letters of recommendation are also required by most 4-year colleges. They will let you know their policy and process for asking during the Junior Presentation in January.
